When most people think of porn, they likely think of mainstream porn found in the most accessible of ways, and most often created by heterosexual white men to serve their own intimate desires. This type of porn, while popular, generally has a limited view of what could be enjoyable or relatable for many other folks who might be seeking erotica stimulation.

Luckily, times are changing and the Swedish film maker Erika Lust is creating and delivering a version of porn that might be more relatable to a wider audience, as The New York Times reports. Lust’s films are made with women’s viewership and enjoyment in mind, along with queer folks and everyday people. In fact, some of her best-known work, a series titled “XConfessions,” which bills itself as the “home to crowd-sourced porn,” featured filmed depictions of her viewers’ real fantasies. Here she allows viewers to “confess” their fantasy or real-life sex stories through the XConfessions website. If she likes the idea, she turns it into a film.

Lust is on a path to transform not just porn movies and plots, but the audiences who will find something enjoyable or relatable in the movies she creates.

“Take, for example, the work of the Swedish filmmaker Erika Lust. She has built her production company, Erika Lust Films, into an art-house pornography behemoth by offering something outside the porn mainstream. Most viewers watch Lust’s stylish, highly produced films by subscribing to her websites, where she also distributes videos by other like-minded directors. But her own films have also been screened in regular movie theaters in Berlin, London, Paris, Los Angeles and New York.”
